Glossary

 

Glossary of Terms used in describing flowers:

BERRY: a fruit that is succulent,  produced from a single ovary

BILATERAL SYMMETRY: upper  and  low  halves  are  different, 
vertically left and right sides are the same 

BRACT:  leaflike part of the flower,  but unlike the other leaves 

CALYX:  outer  ring  of flower parts (sepals) either separate  or 
joined, enclosing the other flower parts in the bud

COROLLA:  the inner circle of flower parts (petals) when a flower 
has two circles and surrounds the stamens and pistil(s)
 
FRUIT: the structure that developes from the ovary (ovaries) and 
contains the seed(s) in flowering plants

FUNGUS:  a  lower plant which lacks chlorophyll and   depends  on 
another organism for existance or support 

INFERIOR OVARY: an ovary surrounded and joined to the basal parts 
of the flower

INFLORESCENCE: group or cluster of flowers

OVARY:  the botton part of a pistil,  which contains the ovule(s) 
in one or more chambers

OVULE: the basic unit contained in the ovary 

PERIANTH:  the  flower  parts  which surrounds  the  stamens  and 
pistil(s)

PETAL:  the  flower  part  usually colored  which  surrounds  the 
stamens and pistil(s)

PISTIL:  the  female structure in a flower,  the bottom part  the 
ovary which developes into the fruit

RADIAL SYMMETRY:  describes a flower that can be divided in  any 
direction yielding  two like halves

SEPAL:  an  outside  part of a flower that  composes  the  calyx, 
usually green but not always

SPADIX:  thick  stem  bearing small,  crowded,  flowers with  out 
stalks

SPATHE: bract(s) which encloses or partially encloses the flower

STAMEN: the male organ in a flower that forms pollen

Superior ovary: the ovary is above and free from the other flower 
parts
